The primary focus of HiPER is the development of fusion energy technology, but the facility will also be able to support a broad range of world class scientific research.

It will provide a 'state of the art' laser facility for Europe, enhancing existing high power single shot laser experimental capability provided by Orion and Vulcan (UK), Laser Mégajoule, LULI and PeTAL and Jenna (Germany).

Achievement of a functioning 'high repetition rate' laser of this energy allows more repetitive-type experiments to be undertaken much more quickly, giving access to a new and unexplored regime for science.

Fundamental Science on HiPER

Laser beam time on HiPER will enable research in hitherto unexplored regimes of super-high energy density physics and for the development of new processes and applications using the machine as an intense source of 14MeV neutrons, high energy ions, X and gamma-rays.

During the Technology Development Phase, prototypes, such as a laser beamline will be required, capable of delivering ~10kJ laser energy at a repetition rate in excess of 10Hz. This new capability will attract its own user community conducting new science and yielding new applications.

Technology Development for HiPER

Over the next ten years the HiPER Project will be 'de-risked' to reinforce confidence in the estimated cost of building the facility, and the necessary technology elements will be developed.

This will lead to new applications of interest to many sectors of industry, with options to generate economic benefit during the journey to construction of the HiPER facility and beyond.
